Choosing a Propane Supplier? Ask These Questions First

When You Partner With a Family-Run Company Like Levco, You Are Treated like Family.
|

Choosing a propane supplier is an important decision for homeowners, but it doesn’t need to be a stressful one. Yes, there are a myriad of companies out there, all competing for your business. Like many of us, you may be attracted to a special low rate, only to find out after your first delivery that there are hidden fees.

It’s true that price is an essential factor when it comes to choosing a new propane supplier to fuel your home. But you need to make sure the company you choose can serve you with more than low prices. Your propane supplier plays a key role in keeping your home fueled, comfortable, and safe as well. Make sure they’re ready to do just that.

So, before you choose your propane supplier, do your research. And let these questions be your guide.

What is their customer service reputation?

Low prices are important, but will the company you chose be there for you in an emergency? Choosing a propane supplier with a proven track record of dependability is key. Check testimonials and Google reviews. Consider the average rating, not just one or two stories.

What is their safety record?

Ask the company about their commitment to safety. Propane is a safe fuel, but mishandling it has severe consequences. Your propane supplier should be able to provide their safety record as well as any regulatory programs they take part in. They should also be able to provide you with information about propane gas safety, signs of a leakage, and what to do in the event of an emergency.

Are they aligned with the appropriate regulatory agencies?

Each state has an agency regulating its propane industry. These agencies and regulatory commissions oversee all activities regarding the LP Gas industry within their respective state. Make sure the company, like Levco, adheres to the safe LP-Gas storage, handling, transportation, and use of propane regulations set by both your state and the federal government.

How long have they been in business?

Companies that have been around for a while have more experience helping families stay safe and comfortable. Propane is one of the safest fuels available. But regardless of whether you use propane to heat your home or only to power certain appliances, it is important to understand how propane operates and its safety instructions. And you want to make sure your propane supplier’s number one priority is keeping you informed and your family safe. If you are choosing a provider new to propane, make sure the company has a solid background in fuel delivery or HVAC services. The safety of your equipment and your family could depend on it.

Do they offer automatic delivery and tank monitoring?

It doesn’t matter if you get one delivery or 10 deliveries a year. You want to know that the company will deliver when you need it. Levco encourages homeowners who use propane to sign up for automatic delivery and tank monitoring. Automatic delivery offers the convenience of not having to check the tank gauge and call when you are running low, peace of mind that your tank is properly filled every time even if you have unexpected usage, and the comfort of knowing your supplier is monitoring your tank to make sure it is functioning properly.

If you go with a will-call company, find out how long it usually takes between your call and your delivery. Companies should be able to deliver within 2-3 business days under normal working conditions, but some are even quicker.

Are flexible payment plans available?

Ask your company if budget plans are available. Paying for all your deliveries during the tough winter months can be difficult. Being able to spread your payments out evenly over the whole year can help control your expenses.

Do they offer tank installation options?

Do they install tanks and does the company allow you to either buy or lease your tank? Ask about the rental fee compared to the cost of buying the tank outright. Leasing a tank offers you the convenience of lower initial costs, and the maintenance is done by the propane company. However, you must purchase propane from the supplier that leases your tank, as regulations prohibit other companies from filling a tank owned by another supplier. Buying a tank is means more of an expense up front but you have the freedom to shop around for propane. If you go with a lease, ask if there is a buyout option.

Can the supplier perform leak checks and run lines?

Ask if the company can perform leak checks and can run gas lines for additional propane applications. Or are they just a supplier.  One of the best benefits of propane is its versatility – it can heat your whole house or power just a few appliances. So, choose a company that can also run additional lines for you if you add appliances or applications. It can save a lot of time and money in not having to call a plumber or another company to do it.

And then, of course, there’s the question of price. But…

What happens after the first fill up price?

Propane companies can be very aggressive in their marketing, offering low first fill rates. So don’t forget to ask if the company charges a HAZ MAT fee and or a delivery fee. If they do, ask how much it is. Also make sure to ask how long the introductory price is good for. Be aware of what you are really paying for propane, beyond those attractive special rates.
