Ever wonder what your HVAC technician does? Or what makes them so skilled at keeping your heating and cooling equipment running so smoothly? Maybe you’re considering a career as an HVAC technician. If so, here’s a glimpse into a typical day in the life of an HVAC technician.
What is an HVAC Technician?
Residential HVAC technicians install and repair heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems in homes. They work in a variety of settings, installing equipment in newly constructed homes and buildings, repairing and replacing old units, and retrofitting and upgrading HVAC systems for improved energy efficiency.
What Training is Required for an HVAC Technician?
According to The Bureau of Labor Statistics, HVAC technician jobs are expected to grow by 15 percent by 2026. And because HVAC systems have become increasingly complex, employers usually want technicians with either a postsecondary education or those who have completed an apprenticeship. Some states, like Connecticut, also require technicians to be licensed.
Not only is the equipment highly technical, but the comfort and safety of your home – and more importantly, your family – are dependent on the technician’s skills. So, it stands to reason that becoming a HVAC tech requires in-depth training and an apprenticeship, but also ongoing professional training.
Some HVAC companies subcontract their service work, while others have a full, in-house staff of licensed technicians. Levco is proud to offer a full team of certified maintenance and repair technicians as well as installation experts capable of handling any HVAC issue you might face.
What does an HVAC Technician Do?
There really is no such thing as a “typical” day for an HVAC tech. Even the same type of job can be different from customer to customer, depending on the physical environment and the condition of the equipment. But one thing is certain. Technicians face new challenges and the need to problem-solve every single day. Here are just some of their duties:
- Install new systems or new parts and components
- Put in electrical components and install or fix electrical wiring
- Inspect systems and components and perform maintenance work
- Troubleshoot issues and determine the source of a problem
- Explain the issue to clients and describe the options to get the system back to peak performance
- Perform repairs
- Install new equipment
What Hours Does an HVAC Technician Usually work?
A breakdown in heating or air conditioning can occur at any time. Therefore, schedules vary a great deal when techs work on repairs and maintenance. Most technicians are required to work some evening and weekend hours. And many HVAC workers often put in extra hours during the starts of summer and winter, which are peak cooling and heating seasons.
What’s an HVAC Technician’s Day Like?
HVAC technicians usually start their day at the company’s facilities, to pick up their appointment schedule and equipment. Some appointments may be simple and quick to take care of, while others may take several hours to complete. After determining which clients are on their schedule for that day, the HVAC technician gathers the tools and safety gear required, and heads to their first location.
The types of jobs that need to be done determines the number of appointments a technician does per day. For example, installing an HVAC unit may take the better part of the day and require several technicians for the job. On the other hand, the tech may have several shorter jobs on their schedule. These can include fixing a blower motor on a heating unit, performing an annual maintenance check, or adding refrigerant to the AC unit.
HVAC technicians work both indoors and outdoors. The inside work can be in uncomfortable or strenuous conditions, like a crawl space or attic. They also work on outdoor equipment – like AC condensers or oil fill pipes, sometimes under less than optimum weather conditions.
And, because HVAC technicians deal with complicated equipment that involves a fuel source and electrical systems, they must remain focused. They must make decisions on every job to minimize risks to themselves and the homeowner’s property. Electric shocks, falls, being injured by equipment or tools, burns, and harm from hazardous chemicals, like refrigerants are just some of the things HVAC techs face. This is one of the reasons the job requires the highest level of skill and licensing. But intensive preparation and ongoing training keeps them and the customer’s home and equipment safe.
HVAC Technicians Are Here to Stay
It isn’t an easy job, but an HVAC technician is one of the most highly skilled positions in the industry. These techs are in high demand and experts believe they are protected from the rising automation trend. It’s estimated that by 2030, automation will replace up to 20 million workers in the manufacturing and service industries. While many workers are concerned that their jobs will become obsolete, HVAC technicians don’t seem to have the same worries. Each new advancement in the HVAC sector requires an HVAC technician to be part of the building and installation of the system. Almost all homes in the U.S. have HVAC technology, and its maintenance is only possible through specialists. Even with smart systems are on the rise, the HVAC technician remains a critical part of a home’s maintenance.
