To Repair, or Replace, That is the Question.

When You Partner With a Family-Run Company Like Levco, You Are Treated like Family.

When your air conditioner isn’t functioning properly, it’s hard to know whether to repair or replace it. Any HVAC technician will tell you that age is one of the most important factors to consider when repairing or replacing your air conditioning system. This is true; however, the most important question to ask is, does the air conditioner do its job? If your unit is 10-15 years old, and you answered, “no” to that question, then you should consider replacing the unit.

Avoiding a Sticky Situation

If your system is 10-15 years old and is doing its job, then you should consider what it would cost, emotionally, if it breaks down at the worst possible time. For example, if you are planning to host a party on the hottest day of the year – your home will be full of people you care about – and you’re sure you or your guests wouldn’t mind the heat, then wait for it to break. If you think that scenario might cause you some unwanted stress, replace it before it breaks!

If you’re new to the home and not sure how old your system is, call the company that serviced the equipment for the previous homeowners. They most likely have a file on the home which will include information like when the last service or maintenance was done.

Are you selling your home?

Think about this if you’re selling your house: if a repair or replacement is going to make your home more comfortable, do you want it to be comfier for you, or the next people who live in the house? Not only will you be more comfortable in the time you have remaining in your home, making updates to your system will add value to your home.

Your AC isn’t very old but needs frequent repairs

Consider the condition of your current unit. What is the quality of your equipment? How often does your equipment require maintenance? If you’re constantly replacing parts or are having the same repair issues, there could be a couple of things happening. One thing you might consider is finding a better service provider. Besides, it’s never a bad idea to get a second opinion. If more than one service company is telling you the same thing, more likely than not, it’s time to replace. As the saying goes, “you get what you pay for”. Unfortunately, if you bought cheap, you got cheap. This time, choose a system that has overall better ratings than the one you’re replacing. And ask your service professional for advice – it’s their job to know what’s what in the wonderful world of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning.

What can you expect from a new system?

The average lifespan of an AC system can range between 10 to 20 years. If your unit is more than 10 years old, you should consider an upgrade to a more efficient unit. As of 2006, a new energy standard emerged that requires residential air conditioners have a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) of 13 or higher. The higher the SEER rating, the more efficient the product. Efficient Air Conditioning systems do a better job at cooling your home and lowering your bills; not to mention your energy footprint! Economically speaking, if you’re going to replace, you should expect to have a 3 year or better ROI.
