Your heating and cooling systems require regular maintenance to keep them running properly. A few monthly maintenance tasks can go a long way to improve your HVAC system’s efficiency and performance. Here are some tips of what you should inspect, clean, schedule, and set for the month of November:
1. Thermostats
November is a great time to replace your thermostats batteries if they require them.
2. Fireplaces
Check and test your fireplace’s damper for correct positioning, ensuring energy conservation and fireplace safety.
3. Humidifier Pads
Humidifier Pads are designed to maintain correct humidity levels of air moisture. This is important for home comfort as well as for protecting wood furniture and flooring. Humidifier Pads also help to reduce skin problems and respiratory issues. Pads should be replaced annually.
4. Air Filters
It is recommended that homeowners change their air filters every thirty to ninety days. If you have disposable filters, remove the old ones and insert a clean replacement. If you have filters that are reusable, wash it according to the manufacturer’s directions and allow it to dry entirely before reinserting it into the filter compartment. Unwanted dirt and dust can clog up your system causing performance issues. You may find it necessary to replace air filters sooner than the usual 3-month mark during times of high use, in which case it’s important to keep a few back up filters handy just in case. If you are having to change air filters too often, check out our blog post: 3 Reasons Your Air Filters Get Dirty So Quickly.
5. Heating Annual Tune-Up
To properly maintain heating equipment, most manufacturers recommend it be serviced and cleaned at least once a year. Most service contracts cover the cost of a tune up to help your system run efficiently through the heating season. Preventative maintenance of your equipment reduces the likelihood of requiring an emergency service call at 2:00 o’clock in the morning on the coldest night of the year.
